The Symphonia Leadership Development will be facilitating a nation-wide
initiative to encourage South Africans to share their stories! They will
be enrolling hosts from all over South Africa. Each of these hosts will be asked to host a story telling
session for a minimum of 90 minutes on Friday, 16th May. The intention is
to simply have a diverse group of people together and to create the space
for these people to tell their stories of growing up and living in South

The Institute of Mathematics and Science Teaching of the Stellenbosch
University will organize a story circle for all employees to share their
stories and learn what underpins the passion they share for

Stories with a small story circle at her house, with friends from various
racial groups to share stories about their early childhood – parents,
siblings, home, environment, school, friends. A simple but great

Working mainly with women and youth, the organization prepared some
activities for the International Day for Sharing Life Stories. There will
be a story circle and The Marimba Group,
comprised of the vulnerable children will be dancing as a form of cultural

Working mainly with the children and youth who attend drama workshops at
the Hillbrow Theatre the community will organize a story circle to gather
and share stories also with the staff who work at theater. The main goal
is to begin to create social cohesion in the inner city of Johannesburg,

The organization will be hosting an evening of sharing
life stories and South African appreciation stories in the local Community
Centre. They have engaged in setting up an exhibition of pictures and
written stories that will be displayed in the local library as well as in
the Community Hall on the evening. They have been approached by a
Documentary film maker to film the event for possible broadcast on the
Cape Town Community TV Network. They expect that people from the Hout bay community

The
audience will consist of the regular members of the writing course (about
twenty people). They will
introduce the session as being part of the international
celebration and, using the prompts provided, complete three sessions of
writing and response in small groups of 1-4 people. The session should
last an hour, ending
with general feedback on experiences and a break for refreshments, where
further discussions can be facilitated. Additional guests for the evening
are also welcome. What?

By listening to each others stories with the intent to
retell it in the first person, the Truth In Translation Project finds that
a deeper sense of listening is activated.
“A different ear is used.”
We also get a brand new perspective on our own stories if we hear
it being told by someone else, in their words: their unique
interpretation. In this sense they will promote a storytelling workshop
with the students of Oudtshoorn High School. What?
